Mental illness does not discriminate. In fact, it almost seems to unfairly favor our Anderson family.
However, people of all racial, ethnic, religious and socioeconomic groups experience mental illness and African Americans are no exception. The similarity stops there, however. Each group
experiences mental illnesses differently. In the African American community mental health problems are often seen as a spiritual problem. Many tend to turn to alternative sources of help rather than
to a psychiatrist or mental health professional. Stigma associated with mental illness also keeps African Americans from seeking the help they need. We need to start taking care of
ourselves. We all know first hand how mental illness can affect us and those around us. So, please, at the first onset of your feeling unlike yourself, don't ignore the signs, get
help! Its okay to talk to a professional. Your sound mind is worth more than the what others think about you. Please, stay healthy Anderson family.
